The team from the UN Global Compact Network Brazil and its guests experienced a unique immersion on the banks of Guajará Bay, visiting Combu Island and the Boa Vista do Acará community. The experience began with a river tour through the narrow channels and igarapés (small Amazonian streams), where the forest revealed itself through the strength of its waters, the relationship of riverside communities with the territory, and the striking presence of biodiversity. The journey allowed for observing the Amazon in motion—as a landscape, a way of life, and a guardian of stories that span generations.
On Combu Island, the group was welcomed by Charles and Iracema for a riverside breakfast, a moment marked by listening and exchange. Through stories about traditions, daily challenges, and a deep connection with the forest, the team gained a direct understanding of how knowledge and livelihood walk hand in hand in the Amazon. Next, in the Boa Vista do Acará community, at Seu Ladi’s homestead, a walk through the forest introduced emblematic trees such as the samaumeira, the Brazil nut tree, and the rubber tree, along with fruits, herbs, and traditional extractive practices, including the harvesting of açaí and Brazil nuts.
The Executive Director of the UN Global Compact Network Brazil, Guilherme Xavier, highlighted the importance of this immersive experience and reflected on the legacies that COP 30 leaves behind: “COP needs to leave three very clear legacies: for the host city, for Brazil, and for the world. Belém has already shown us its strength and joy in hosting; Brazil reaffirms its role as a protagonist in topics such as food, energy, and technology; and the world benefits from the decisions that advance here.” He also thanked the team and partner companies for strengthening the Pact’s ongoing work: “Experiences like this remind us why we do what we do. They bring our agendas closer to reality and reinforce commitments that leave a positive mark for everyone.”
At the end of the day, the Amazonian Immersion reinforced that the forest teaches through coexistence. Every encounter, every conversation, and every step taken among the trees revealed new understandings about the territory and its importance. The experience brought the Pact and its guests closer to local wisdom, expanding their ability to envision and build futures that respect the Amazon and those who keep it alive.
