COMBATING GREENWASHING

The ‘Combating Greenwashing’ project brings together the Action Platforms against Corruption, Climate Action, and Action to Communicate and Engage in favor of integrity in communication about environmental commitments.

WHAT IS THE GOAL?

The project aims to strengthen the role of compliance professionals in preventing greenwashing within companies’ institutional communication, making them an essential part of the information validation and verification process.

HOW TO ACHIEVE IT?

By providing the collaborative construction of knowledge in favor of greater compliance of Brazilian companies’ sustainability reports with regulatory requirements and best practices of integrity and transparency.

CONTEXT

The increase in greenwashing cases in advertising campaigns and sustainability reports highlights the lack of materiality of ESG issues, the absence of beneficial impacts on the environment, and the lack of commitment and accountability of companies to their sustainability goals. This scenario generates distrust in the market.

Thus, sustainability, communication, and compliance professionals have a fundamental role in combating greenwashing.

Compliance, in addition to working to ensure that laws and regulations are correctly followed, also has the fundamental role of safeguarding reputation and ensuring ethical and integral conduct inside and outside the company.

Therefore, the project seeks to integrate agendas and train companies in the best practices of institutional communication about their environmental sustainability actions, ensuring compliance at all stages of the process. This effort will contribute to greater compliance of companies’ communication with the standardized norms (IFRS S1 and S2) defined by the International Sustainability Standards Board (ISSB), as well as the sustainability regulations of the Brazilian Advertising Self-Regulation Code (CONAR) and the Securities and Exchange Commission (CVM).
