WHAT IS THE GOAL?
Its goal is to mobilize resources and engage companies, governments, and society in the fight against chronic pollution of the ocean and watersheds by solid waste, notably plastics, through preventive and corrective actions, in accordance with SDG 14 (Life below water) and the 2030 Agenda. The initiative is aligned with the United Nations Decade of Ocean Science for Sustainable Development, which spans the period between 2021 and 2030.
HOW TO ACHIEVE IT?
The project is composed of 3 fronts:
- Diagnosis: seasonal sample collections for understanding the typology of waste, and preparation of the National Waste Inventory;
- Socio-environmental awareness: cleaning activations with immediate removal of waste in natural environments;
- Prevention: support for floating waste damming and interception structures.
CONTEXT
A groundbreaking study, commissioned by Blue Keepers in 2022, indicates that each Brazilian may be responsible for polluting the seas with 16kg of plastics per year, and that 1/3 of the plastic produced throughout Brazil is at risk of reaching the ocean every year. The research was presented at the 2022 United Nations Ocean Conference.
In 2023, a second study revealed that Brazil has 600 major ‘entry points’ for plastic pollution in the Atlantic Ocean. The data are public and available by accessing our Webmap. The study was presented at the meeting of the International Treaty to End Plastic Pollution, led by UN Environment. Both studies were conducted in partnership with the Oceanographic Institute of the University of São Paulo.
Starting in 2024, Blue Keepers will make available the data from its sample collections of waste found in mangroves, beach shorelines, and riverbanks in different locations in Brazil. The National Waste Inventory is a deliverable that aims to stimulate company initiatives for design solutions, reverse logistics, and behavior.
Concurrently, the project will begin to promote actions by organized civil society in conjunction with companies and local governments, focusing on the interception and collection of floating waste combined with the monitoring and collection of more data.
